I really didn't realize how hard it would be for me to get going again after taking some time off for the Holidays. Granted, things have been swinging over on the Facebook page, but this side of The Heights Life has been radio silence. Time to breathe some life back in to the old girl with some Happenings around the Heights.

Saturday, January 28, 9 am: Volunteers needed for work on Heights Blvd

I think most people agree that Heights Boulevard is really a jewel in the neighborhood. Like all green spaces, it took it's hits during the drought and the Heights Association is working hard to get it back in to tip top shape. This Saturday, they will need many hands on deck to work on patching the Paul Carr Jogging trail which runs down the Heights Boulevard esplanade.
Work begins at 9 AM just north of 11th Street -- just look for the granite piles and you'll be sure to find the right folks. Local business Ravenscourt Landscaping has generously volunteered to help get started this week at 20th Street -- Saturday's volunteers will pick up where they leave off.
The projects is basically putting a layer of decomposed granite over areas which have worn down to the crushed limestone base. Bring gloves, garden rakes, and shovels. If you know any runners or others who use this trail, make sure you let them know the HHA could use their help.

Saturday, January 28, 8 pm: Houston Press Artopia

Artopia is "dedicated to highlighting Houston’s rich and diverse artists, musicians, fashion designers, culinary masters and cocktail creators."
This year’s event will feature live musical performances by Folk Family Revival, Finnegan, Young Mammals, DJ Kyle Berg and Dave Wrangler.
The performing art stage will include performances by Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, Cuadro La Tempestad Flamenco and Talento Bilingue de Houston.
Fashion shows will be held featuring the Heights own La Camella
Street artist Coolidge will create an image of a Boston terrier and hide the image in Winter Street Studios. Attendees can help find our missing dog, hash tag the image using #HPArtopia and #SpotTheDog to be entered to win a reward.
Guests will also be able to enjoy light bites from local restaurants, including Heights favorites Zelko Bistro, BB’s Cafe and many others.
$45 donation for advance General Admission, $55 at the door and $90 donation for advance VIP . Ticket includes entertainment, food sampling along with cocktail, wine and beer tastings. Join The Corkscrew as they "show our contempt for this Hallmark Card made up holiday that used to have my butt heading down to Fannin to get victimized by all night florists, and have me promising to do awful things to get a last minute reservation at some nice place to eat. "

What is PIP? And how does it help you?

I've posted about the Houston Police Department's PIP Program before but with a recent rash of home break-ins, I thought this information would be valuable again:

The Positive Interaction Program (PIP) holds monthly PIP meetings featuring speakers from different divisions (Burglary and Theft, Homicide, K-9, Helicopters, etc.) explaining how their division operates.
The meeting is a chance to meet the officers that patrol your neighborhood and get to know them on a first name basis. You even hear from the Captain of your sub-station.
Since the pilot program of PIP in 1983 at one sub-station, it has grown considerably. There are now thirty PIP groups that meet every month throughout the city. The goal of PIP is the education of the citizens of Houston on how their police department functions. Once a citizen understands how the police department does its job, that citizen can better relay to the police department their neighborhood needs.

As soon as Sunday morning, the comments were flying. From Facebook to Twitter to our neighborhood moms' group, people seem much happier this year than last. Looks like the little tweaks and changes the committee made had a wide spread, positive impact.

A huge THANK YOU to all the residents of Woodland Heights, who volunteer their time and resources to allow the rest of us to have so much fun each year. Your efforts are truly appreciated!

Grand Openings!

This weekend welcomes two new businesses to the neighborhood. Both Heights owned and operated, La Camella and Heights Vinyl will be opening in the same White Oak strip center as Write Now! Greetings.

Heights Vinyl is exactly what the name implies. Craig Brown's new record shop may sound like an archaic concept to some. However, vinyl has taken on a cult status in recent years and musicians are even releasing new music on this old format. Call it nostalgia if you must, but there is something about dropping the needle on the record... (Check out this 2009 NYT article)
La Camella is a women's boutique which will specialize in clothing, shoes and accessories by lesser known and independent labels. According to her website (linked above) the store will sell "beautiful, well-designed and well-crafted lines... not otherwise carried in the city." I look forward to exploring what she has to offer. While women's clothes are not necessarily scarce in the Heights, there is definitely room for growth and, right now, there is no one carrying this quality of merchandise.

Both stores will be open on Friday, December 9, with Grand Opening celebrations planned to coincide with Lights In The Heights on Saturday. There will be much live music, food, drinks (notably, almost-in-the-Heights beer darlings Karbach Brewery) and, of course, shopping. Stop by and welcome our newest local businesses !

Friday, December 9, 7:30 pm: Heights Live! welcomes Graham Wilkinson

Another great show from Heights Live!'s family friendly concert series, hosted on the grounds of Heights Presbyterian Church.
This week "on the rug" you'll find world traveller Graham Wilkinson, whose new album "The Spiritual Accessories" was just released in October, 2011.
The small size of this BYOB venue allows listeners and performers to interact and have a truly unique concert going experience.
$12 at the door. Doors 7:30, show starts at 8 pm. Kids welcome. 240 W 18th.

Saturday, December 10, Noon- 6pm: Join Homespun: Houston Handmade for an open house

Want something to do during the hours before Lights in the Heights? Homespun: Houston is "part art gallery and part retail shop, showcasing local and handmade goods in the heart of The Heights. [Their] blog is dedicated to promoting local makers, creative people, and businesses."
Look for their sweet little studio on the corner of Byrne and Reagan (facing Reagan). They’ll be offering lots of local and handmade goodness, along with their family tradition of warm Gluhwein for the holiday event!

Retro. Retail. Therapy.

A couple of weeks ago I had the great pleasure of taking part in an event at Thairapy Salon in Montrose. The salon recently moved in to a great new space and used their new square footage to host a "A Little Retro Thairapy" in support of Bread of Life, a Houston non-profit working to feed the more than 80,000 families who go hungry in Houston on a daily basis. Hunger, especially childhood hunger, is an issue that I care deeply about, so I was so happy to participate in something that was both fun and very worthwhile.

The idea was to "fall back into a time before botox and boob jobs. When jello molds and cat eye glasses were all the rage, and hair, makeup and style were more 'starlet' than 'harlot.' " Stylists from the salon treated a few of us to retro makeovers with vintage inspired hair and makeup. The lovely ladies at Heights' own Heights Beatniks provided retro wear for us for a complete flash back look.

I went to browse the racks at Beatniks a couple days before the party, where I met fellow participant and lifestyle guru Beth DeLozier. (Beth's company, Tres Chic Designs, specializes in home staging, organizing and personal shopping. I think that might be the best job in the world.) Beth and I perused the racks to find our perfect outfits. One of the things I love about Beatniks is their inventory is carefully curated. They don't have tons and tons of racks to pick through; everything is organized, clean and in excellent condition. There was a nice variety for each decade and each size, including men and kiddos. I ended up with a great blue and white dress and white handbag, but the look was still incomplete. I needed shoes and my dress needed a belt. If I remember one thing about my grandmother's hold-over style from the 50s-70s, it was that everything matched! I knew to really have the look a white belt and white shoes would be an absolute necessity. I didn't want to do it half-way, but Beatniks didn't have any white shoes in my size. I knew I would have to complete the look on my own.

Luckily, I never far from great vintage shopping and headed straight up to 19th Street to finish my look for the paryt. First stop: Retropolis. It's big and packed full- a great place for browsing and trying on things and even doing some reminiscing about your childhood. The 80s are even retro enough now that I can reminisce about high school in the midst of their racks. And, of course, I found exactly what I was looking for! White 50s-60s era shoes, in almost my size (8.5. I wear a 9. It was do-able). I also picked up a white leather-ish belt and was done. Done with my outfit, that is. There was still more to be seen---- and bought!

Even after finding the belt and shoes, the chock full racks of clothes and accessories were calling to me. When I was younger (and thinner) I lived in thrift store finds. I was never artsy-creative-alternative or anything like that. In fact, I am a very plain dresser, but I was broke and was often able to find close to current items at rock bottom prices. The year that JCrew had women's velvet blazers on their catalog cover for $150+, I found a 70s men's velvet tuxedo jacket at a thrift store in Dallas. In fact, I found two. One is a rich wine color with brown buttons, the other is black with a thin lapel. The sleeves on the black one were/are a little short, but I would kind of roll them and it never mattered. They were my pride and joy, for under $20 each. I still have them and still wear the wine one, but the black is a little too snug. That was in the mid-90s. I am older and have had a couple of kids, so my needs for clothes have changed. I am not in the market for velvet tuxedo jackets now, but I knew there was going to be something good to be had. I was right.

A couple booths down from the rack where I snagged my white shoes, I found this great knit jacket. Made in Belgium, 100% wool but light weight with 3/4 sleeves, which are my favorite. This little number is perfect for our Houston "winter." The patch pockets are kind of military and the pattern in the fabric makes it just a little more interesting for my plain Jane, weekday style. I think it was about $30 and I've already worn in every day under 70 degrees since I bought it.

Despite having a plain jane clothing style, I am a freak about accessories. Jewelry and purses give my white shirt and jeans aesthetic a punch and show that I actually have some personality behind these all the solid colors. At Retropolis, I found three, yes three, fun bags to join my collection.

I loved this velvet bag for it's color and texture. It's big enough to hold my usual lump of junk- phone, wallet, spare diaper- but not so big that it becomes all Mary Poppins.

This little white bag will be great for spring/summer weddings and parties, or even a nice date night with my husband. The great thing about these vintage bags is they never go "out."

And then this navy, faux snake skin purse reminded me of my old schools days of thrift/vintage shopping. Snake skin is the trend right now. You don't have to be a slave to fashion to know it. You can't get a catalog in the mail or walk through the mall without seeing it. Sure, this bag from the 80s isn't real snakeskin or even very high quality, but from a few feet back (and with the strap off, used as a clutch) it is as cute as what's on the shelf at Nordstrom right now. And I paid less than $20 for it. Me for the win!

I was giddy as I dumped my finds in to the back of my car. Little did I know, my best purchases of the day were yet to come. I had about an hour until school pick up for my youngest, so walked down to Carter & Cooley for my favorite Dr Brown's Diet Cream Soda. I swear, C&C is the only place you can get these for miles.

As I headed to the deli, I passed by Replay on 19th. I had actually never been in to Replay before. Outside, they always have mannequins dressed in colorful 70s frocks and a small rack of brightly patterned dresses. I guess I kind of thought that is what they specialized in and there is nothing wrong with that, it's just not my style. This day, though, I had time to kill and a vintage buying bug, so I popped in.

Like Retropolis, Replay is packed with racks full of clothing. The store, however, is well organized and bright. The store is, I believe, owned and operated by a couple, so rather than items grouped by vendor, the store is sectioned so you'll find hats together, bags together, jewelry together. I was greeted and offered help as I browsed the racks. I wasn't pulling out much. I made it to the very back (housewares), tried on some hats. Nothing was jumping out at me, until... Toward the back corner of the store, sticking out from the end of a very crowded rack, I found it. This beautiful vintage Bill Blass coat.

I put it on. Perfect fit. I walked around, catching myself in a couple of mirrors, thinking about the things in my closet I could wear it with. The gentleman working (perhaps the owner?) told me someone else had just been in 3 days before and did the same thing- put the coat on and walked around. "She loved it, she said," he told me. "She said she would be back to get it on Thursday and we told her if she even left just $10 down, we would hold it for her." She said, no, it was ok. She'd be back on Thursday. It was Tuesday. I bought it. Sorry!

Bill Blass was an influential American designer, especially known for sportswear. His career began in the mid 1940s and lasted until he was diagnosed with cancer in 1999. Blass died in 2002.

Well, hello there. The lining of the coat is what my friend Jila calls "a secret smile." It's my own little bit of whimsy when I open the coat to put it on. And when was the last time anyone got a coat at Neiman's for $50?

But here is the real joy from my day of vintage shopping. On top of a clothes rack in the middle of the store was this Samsonite train case. I love it. LOVE IT. I didn't even hesitate on this. I pulled it down and had them hold it behind the counter. These are not exceptionally rare, but this one does have the original Lucite tray, which is harder to find. It's also in PERFECT condition. It just seemed special to me and I wanted it. Period.

It's hard to describe why I think this is so special or why I am drawn to items like this one. It's not like clothes where I can say "I got this trend for cheap" or "I can wear this all the time." I don't even know what I'll do with it. I hesitate to put make up in it because it will probably get dirty and stained inside if I do. Maybe jewelry? Maybe I'll just leave it on the shelf in my closet and admire it? Either way, happiness is mine!

After my total win with these two items, Replay has a new customer for life. I was so excited about my finds, I popped in next door at The Lift to chat with Rhonda and show her what I bought. If you've never met Rhonda, go in to her store. She is a ray of sunshine. Always. I could have brought in a hairball and she would have complimented me on it, but her almost equal enthusiasm for my train case allowed me to bask in the happiness of buying it just that much longer. Rhonda also made a comment that I have been meaning to investigate. As I was showing her the case, Price is Right style, she mentioned having seen one like this in the back room at Harold's before they closed. If it had been used as a display at Harold's, that would explain how it managed to stay in such good shape and also have the tray. I wonder if Replay (wisely) grabbed this during the liquidation? If so, that would justify my love for this little piece of luggage even more, as it would be a part of Heights history in my possession. I'll let you know what I find out!

This free event at the George R. Brown Convention Center gives local small business owners a unique opportunity to meet with buyers from City departments and discuss current and future procurement opportunities. There will be information presented on the City procurement process, vendor registration and requirements.
Attendees can also learn about Hire Houston First, an ordinance passed by Houston City Council that is intended to boost the local economy by utilizing Houston-area businesses.

Indulge in an evening of retro glamour before the holidays kick into high gear. On November 17, 2011, from 6:30p.m.-8:30pm, Thairapy is sponsoring a pin-up-worthy event.

This is the reminder letter I got from the I45 Coalition today, which highlights some of the big questions. PLEASE attend. We are fighting for our homes!

REMINDER –TxDOT Public Scoping Meeting is tonight at Jeff Davis High School, 1101 Quitman St., 6 pm – 8 pm.Meeting will be in an ‘Open House’ format, so you can come & go. A short 10-minute video will be shown regarding the project. There will be informational maps shown & TxDOT will be there to answer questions.
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ATTEND SO YOU WILL KNOW WHAT TxDOT IS PLANNING TO DO ON I-45!  TxDOT wants your input!  Please give it to them!!~ New updates ~·        TxDOT says that “Acquisition of additional ROW (right-of-way) would be required to construct the proposed improvements”!  What are the proposed improvements??  No one knows!  [a]
·        TxDOT says that along I-45 from I-10 heading north to 610 – additional ROW will likely be needed atall intersecting streets with I-45. [b]   How far into the neighborhood?
·        TxDOT also says that along I-45 from 610 North to Beltway 8 North – more ROW will likely be neededeverywhere – at & between all intersections! [b]   How much bigger? How far into the neighborhood?

At the Public Meeting make sure you get as many answers as you can.  If there are ANY questions that do not get answered - or - if you do not like the answers, it is VITAL that you put your comments in writing either at the meeting, by email or by postal mail after the meeting but no later than12/5/11.Are there concerns or demands that you have?   Put them in writing! Here are some of our concerns and questions:·        TxDOT has already stated they want additional right-of-way to increase the size of the freeway! How much is enough?
·        We do NOT want to expand the freeway right-of-way! Do NOT expand into our neighborhoods!·        We would like reduced congestion but not at the expense of losing our homes!·        We do NOT want a multi-level freeway above the ground – the noise and pollution will affect our neighborhoods! … our schools & our children!
·        We want TxDOT to look into other technologies – other than just pouring more & more concrete for more and more lanes. We don’t have room for an I-10 on I-45!

Grown up puppets perform a new piece by Joel Orr, artistic director of Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theater
Bobbindoctrin has been producing original puppet works for Houston since 1995. Bobbindoctrin provides experimental adult puppet performances with low admission prices and gives actors, directors, playwrights, musicians, sculptors, dancers and engineers a much-needed and unique venue for their art while encouraging theatregoers from all economic strata to attend.
Bobbindoctrin has a history of introducing audiences to new forms of stagecraft using puppet techniques rarely touched upon by conventional theatre groups. Bobbindoctrin incorporates a mix of shadow, rod, hand, string and tabletop puppetry, as well as masks, in any given show. These varied traditions of puppetry are applied to presenting new and original works (not performed or published elsewhere) written explicitly for the puppet stage by local playwrights.

Can You Serve Some "Breakfast for the Brain"?

If you're fitness oriented, here is a wonderful opportunity to pass on that passion to the next generation!

Ms. Sipps, the PE Teacher at Travis Elementary, is starting a morning fitness program for 4th and 5th graders. It is called "Breakfast for the Brain." She is cleaning out a storage area at the school to make a fitness room where the kids can exercise in the mornings before school (it will also be available to faculty at other times). A lot of kids are already at school during that time, doing nothing but sitting around. And many of them are the ones who most need some physical exercise. It sounds like a great and much needed program.

Ms. Sipps is looking for volunteer mentors and donations. Mentors would join the group from 7:15-7:45 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and/or Thursdays to work out with a child and mentor him or her throughout the year (once a week is fine, preferably the same day each week). Volunteers do not have to be a Travis parent to be a mentor, all you need is a desire to make a difference for some of these kids. You would need to be cleared through HISD's Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) program if you aren't already, but that is apparently a simple process.

Criminal Scum on the Loose!

I am posting this with permission from a neighborhood mom and member of Heights Kids Group. She sent it to the forum, but as you can imagine is feeling pretty vulnerable right now so I am not including any of her information. This is just too important not to share!

Hi! I just wanted to post this to the group just in case it can help prevent this from happening to anyone else. Last Thursday I came home with all three kids to find my backdoor wide open! I was terrified! They took EVERYTHING!!! Even our food.. Most importantly they robbed me and my family of our sense of security in our own home. :(

Anyway, [this group has] consistently been hitting about 5 houses in the area a day. They seem to be focusing in Lazybrook, Timbergrove, and Garden Oaks/Oak Forest. One of the worthless thieves was caught and arrested on Monday. I spoke with an officer today and [the thief] is out and has already hit more houses!! Absolutely ridiculous that he was able to bond out. Infuriates me!

I wanted to post all the info I have been given so if you see them please call the police as soon as possible. I saw two vehicles that fit the description this morning and they said it was them but were unable to get them. :( There is a tan Ford 150 (four door) with license plate number 35H BG9. Tan buick sedan license plate CB7 N25. There is also a light blue toyota and black SUV (possibly a Tahoe). They apparently knock on the door and when no answer they go around back and kick in the door. Please always make your presence known! The police said even if there is a car and alarm they will kick in door with no answer. Which terrified me since I NEVER answer the door. Be safe and please please please keep your eyes out for these cars! The guys that have been spotted at the door and previously arrested are hispanic males. One is about 6ft tall and 200 pounds with tattoos on his neck and sometimes wears horn rimmed glasses. There were apparently two white males that knocked for a long time on my door the day before our robbery! My neighbors said they were very insistent and aggressive with knocking. Please stay safe and keep your eyes out!

So, there you have it. All eyes on deck to find these guys before someone else has to share a story like this! In my opinion, the best neighbors are nosey neighbors.

Kroger is basically building a replica of the 11th St store next to Arne's (on those great lots that could be something much more dynamic and beneficial to Houston).

Representatives from Super Neighborhood 22 (The West End) met with CM Gonzales and reps from Kroger to discuss the project. This is what we're getting:

The Kroger Plan
The new store will be about the same size and design as the store on Shepherd at 11th, which will remain open, as will the store on 20th at Yale. The store is expected to open about a year from now (Sept-Oct 2012). The amenities of the store will be similar to those at the 11th Street store.

The property on which Kroger plans to build lies on the east side of Studemont north of Arne’s. The store will be at the south end of the property, facing the main customer parking lot to the north of the store. A fuel center will be placed at the north end of the property together with a small, secondary parking lot needed to fulfill code requirements.
Delivery docks will be located on the east and west faces of an extension on the south side of the store. The three main delivery dock doors will face east toward an industrial area. A small dock door will face west toward Studemont.

Hicks will be cut through to meet Summer Street on the east side of the property. The City's intent is that this will become a through street, but there are some unspecified impediments. The portion of the block that is now Hicks will be improved to current City standards, and the whole block will be built like a City CIP project. Kroger will eventually dedicate that property to the City as street Right-of-Way in exchange for a smaller area of water/sewer ROW that the City will dedicate to Kroger. Access to the delivery docks will be from Hicks/Summer. An employee parking lot will occupy the portion of the lot south of Hicks/Summer next to Arne's; Kroger expects that Arne's will also use this lot at some point (possibly for its employees).

The main entrance to the customer parking area will be just in front of (north of) the store. There will be a new median cut with a traffic signal at this point. The City will be working with Grocer's Supply to move their truck exit to this point. The existing median cut north of there will become a diagonal cut allowing southbound traffic access to the fuel center (and preventing trucks leaving Grocers Supply from cutting across/against traffic to use it to go north). There will be two distinct curb cuts for the fuel center entrance and exit.
There will be a pharmacy drive-through on the west side of the store, entered from the main drive entrance and exiting onto Hicks/Summer.

Kroger will be doing a lot of landscaping on the median, along their side of the streets, and on their parking lot. I didn't note all the species, but the trees on the parking lot will be mostly Shumard oaks for shade with a few crepe myrtles for color. Texas native shrubs and other plantings were also mentioned. Kroger will be adopting the street and median, and will install an irrigation system to maintain the plants. The sidewalk along their property will be five feet wide (25% above minimum standard). Please find attached to this note three photographs of the Kroger plans displayed at the meeting.

Traffic Study
There was discussion of the effects of the proposed median changes on traffic flow, but there was no mention of formal traffic studies, either for the immediate area or surrounding areas.

Drainage Plan

When asked about the project’s drainage plan, Kroger representatives told meeting attendees that because the amount of impervious surface is not expected to increase above historic levels that the site is "grand-fathered," meaning that no detention will be required. There was considerable discussion of the desirability of improving the drainage to meet current standards (as if this was a newly developed property). One of the Kroger employees agreed to discuss the feasibility of doing so with their engineering people.

Planned Contribution to Olivewood Cemetery

Kroger has also agreed to provide $40,000 for a new fence around Olivewood Cemetery (which lies just west of Grocers Supply).

Economic Development Agreement(Pursuant to Chapter 380 of the Local Government Code)

City Council will be considering a request from the administration to enter an Economic Development Agreement (a 380 Agreement) with Kroger pursuant to which Kroger will be reimbursed for improvements made to the City ROW. The reimbursements will be paid from city property and sales tax revenues produced by the Kroger store at this location, will be capped at $2.5M, and will be repaid over a period of 13 years. The 380 agreement is Agenda Item #16 on this week’s City Council agenda. The full text of the agreement is not included in the agenda backup materials posted on the City Secretary’s website.

From my personal perspective, this project equals an as-if-you-thought-it-could-get-even-worse traffic nightmare on Studewood, a development that will be difficult to ever repurpose due to the gas station and over saturation of the market. Many food deserts still exist with in a few miles of this proposed location. Why not Lindale Park, Eastwood, Independence Heights?

However, a representative from Super Neighborhood 22 had positive things to say about this project, commenting that a grocery has been high on the wish list for the SN council for some time. So, good if the SN, which has a very well thought out plan for their neighborhood, approves. That tells me it's not as bad as I think it is. EDIT: RUMOR has it that SN 22 will actually be coming out against this project after further review. If & when they do, I'll update again.

Still, it leaves me sighing for yet another missed opportunity- and I certainly don't want to see my tax $ go to it. If it was in Independence Heights, a known food desert, I would say "Bring on the 380" but this just leaves me shaking my head. Again.

While I am certainly ready for the heat to be behind us, I am not ready for the onslaught of Christmas crap and other holiday junk, which hits the shelves earlier and earlier every year (it's already out at Target). It can make me quite the Scrooge. I digress... On to Happenings in our immediate and near immediate future!

The owners of Bungalow Fitness, Laura Finkeldey and Angie Hasara, are equally as passionate about rescuing lost and abandoned animals as they are about health and fitness. Recently, they've teamed up with Lucky Dog Rescue, a local non-profit rescue group. Lucky Dog Rescue has helped Laura and Angie to continue their personal efforts saving animals in need.

Bike Rally Up, People!

I got an email from a recent college grad last week asking if she could guest post on the blog. Usually I dismiss those requests immediately, but I emailed her back and asked what she wanted to write about. She sent me this little write up on this weekend's bike rally. I know the Rally still wants/needs participants so I thought "Why not?" And without further ado:

Registration Winding Down For Heights’ Bicycle Rally/Scavenger Hunt-- Paige Taylor

One of the largest annual events in the Houston Heights is still open for registration for the last week in September. There are 3 days left until the September 29 deadline to sign up. The rally will be open to people of all ages and will be an easy ride for both experienced and novice riders.

Registrants will have the option to ride a 20 mile course which will run through the Heights and a few different neighborhoods in the area. The other option is a five mile ride that is geared to attract both kids and parents alike. Both of the routes will begin and finish at 18^th Street and Heights Boulevard at Marmion Park, as participants can ride both courses if they’d like.

Upon registration, those who sign up will receive their rally cards, maps, and clue list for the scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt will take place along the 5 mile ride. For the riders that identify the most clues along the ride, there will be prizes awarded. Following the ride there will be a party lasting from 3:30pm to 4:30pm at the park. It will include prizes, food, refreshments and entertainment.

The entry and registration fee is reduced if you register before the September 29 deadline, although you can still sign up on the day of the ride. If you sign up before September 29 at 8pm the entry fee is $20 for the 20 mile ride and $10 for the 5 mile ride. For those who sign up the day of the rides, the fees will be up to $25 and $15 respectively. The pickup for race packets will take place on the morning of the ride at Marmion Park beginning at 8am

Republic Services will be the primary sponsor for the event, they specialize environmental contracts and waste management. Design & Inspiration, a branding and solution source, helped through sponsorships as well. Minor sponsorship also help came from Boulevard Realty, who assists residents with Houston area apartments, homes and condominium sales.

The proceeds from the event will right back into the community with the restoration, beautification, maintenance and education throughout the Heights area. More information and registration applications can be found at the Houston Heights Association Website.

Sometime before lunch

Proctor Park

Remember a couple of weeks ago when the weather "cooled" to the low 90s and we all let out a little sigh of relief and decided to go outside again? My family was so excited and ready to get in some good park time. We had been in a state of reverse hibernation, hiding from the intense heat instead of sleeping through the bitter cold.

We loaded up our red wagon with all the necessary park supplies: blanket to relax on, small trucks and digging tools, a soccer ball, bug spray, sunblock, cold water, fruit and bunny crackers. Big Boy rode his bike, training wheels squeaking from lack of use. Wee One road in the wagon, the park supplies heaped on his lap. As we got close to the park, it was a real joy to see people. Kids on skateboards, parents counting to 10 as little guys scrambled to hide, games of catch and tag. The park was alive again.

Then we noticed what wasn't alive. The grass. The big, open area of Proctor was brown and dusty. The small, sandy area near home base (where the kids dig) had grown to a sand pit three times it usual size. And the trees.... So sad and droopy, some with brown leaves. It was a sad sight to see; it almost brought the excitement of just being there down to Neutral.

After about 30 minutes of hanging at Proctor, I saw a red car pull up. The driver got out and opened the hatch to reveal 2 large coolers and a 5 gallon bucket. The man filled the bucket, walked in to the park and dumped it out at the base of a small tree on the north side of the park. Repeat. Take the cooler out and dump the remaining water. Leave. Come back. Repeat. During my family's time at the park he made at least 3 round trips, bringing buckets of water to the smaller, needier trees.

I approached him. "Thank you so much for doing this," I said. He was worried about the condition of the trees. It wasn't a lot, he said, but he wanted to do something. He said he didn't think he could do enough for the big trees but that maybe he could do something for the small ones. I told him I was feeling the same way about the Norhill esplanade but hadn't realized how bad it got around the park.

"I'm Scott."

"Hi, Scott. I'm Viula. Thanks again. Really."

Now that it's rained a bit, I am more optimistic for the trees of the Heights. I hope this week's Weather Underground predictions are better than our local news station's. They're saying possible rain daily. Local sources say rain today and sun the rest of the week. I never thought I would want rain so badly.

And who knows if this little bit of rain we've had will save the trees or not. We can hope so. We can also say "Thanks, Scott" for helping give them a fighting chance.

If you have yet to check out a performance in beautiful Lambert Hall, this is a great time to change that. Our little "hometown" opera company has been getting more and more national press and tickets may become harder and harder to come by. Seeing an opera so up close and personal, in a setting so intimate that no sound amplification is used, is truly amazing. You don't need to be an opera enthusiast (all operas are subtitled). These performances will win the heart of anyone who likes theater and/or live music.

My Houston 2040 is a meeting of the minds co-hosted by Houston Tomorrow, Citizens' Transportation Coalition, & Air Alliance Houston. This month, the featured speakers will be Christof Spieler on the Midtown Livable Center Program and Robin Holzer, Chair of the CTC, on her vision for the future of Houston.
For seven years, Robin Holzer has chaired the board of the Citizens' Transportation Coalition (CTC), which she helped create in 2004. CTC is an all-volunteer nonprofit that works to engage community leaders in the planning of transportation projects that affect Houston neighborhoods. CTC volunteers have touched myriad local projects, including METRO's urban light rail expansion and TxDOT's proposed Grand Parkway. Robin has presented at conferences across the U.S., including Walk21, New Partners for Smart Growth, and Gulf Coast Green, and her efforts have been honored locally by the Museum District Business Alliance, the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club, and the East End Chamber of Commerce.
Christof Spieler P.E., LEED AP is Director of Technology and Innovation at Morris Architects. His expertise in infrastructure, urban design, and sustainability has been a key part of planning projects including the Midtown Livable Centers Study, the Downtown / EaDo Livable Centers Study, and the Sugar Land Comprehensive Mobility Plan. Christof also leads firmwide efforts in LEED, project process, and Building Information Modeling.
Christof has written and spoken extensively on transit and urban planning and has helped Houston neighborhoods shape transportation projects. His articles have appeared in Cite Magazine (where he served on the editorial committee from 1998 to 2010, including 2 years as chair), the Houston Chronicle, and Architecture Magazine; he also covered Houston and national transportation in his blog, Intermodality. He serves as a technical advisor to the Citizens' Transportation Coalition, a board member of the Rice Design Alliance, a member of the East End Chamber of Commerce Rail Subcommittee, and an advisor to the Super Neighborhood 22 Transportation Committee and Richmondrail.org. As is a member of the American Public Transit Association's Sustainability and Urban Design Working Group, which is drafting national standards for urban design around transit stations. This work lead to his 2010 appointment by Mayor Annise Parker to the Board of Directors of METRO.

Well, I am holed up at home with bronchitis. Cue sad "awwwwww." It's misery and I am not a good patient. I'm pretty whiny and miserable. I would like to be asleep but the cough and medications make that tough so, since I have to be awake and upright, what better time to jump back in the routine of posting about some great events in and around the Heights? I mean, I was going to get back to it, sick or not, but I have to admit my summer vacation was nice. You can't blame me for wanting to stretch it out a little bit, can you?

So, here we go. Not much to report, but it's a start!

Friday, August 26, 7 or 9 PM: GGallery presents "No Hidden Meanings: Original music inspired by the paintings of Wayne Gilbert."

Dan Workman, who Wayne calls a "magical musical shaman," and members of the Two Star Symphony will be putting on two performances of original music.

Friends For Life, our Heights based non-profit, no kill shelter, needs them! They use newspaper to line kitty litter boxes at the shelter, roughly 100 each day, and are almost completely out! Please drop off newspapers at during biz hours if you have any to spare.

Registration now open for 6th Annual Heights Scavenger Hunt and Bike Rally

The Annual Bike Rally is open to riders of all ages, and designed as a casual self-paced ride.

Entrants can choose between a 20-mile course through the Heights and near-by neighborhoods, or a shorter 5-mile ride designed for kids and their adult companions -- OR DO BOTH -- starting and finishing at Marmion Park, located at 18th Street and Heights Boulevard.

After completing the ride, participants are invited to celebrate at Marmion Park for the Post Ride Party beginning at 3:30 p.m. and Awards Ceremony at 4:30 p.m., with entertainment, fabulous door prizes, and great refreshments including picnic fare, beverages and more!

This is a great event for the whole family to participate in and help raise some money to support the Heights. Proceeds from the Bike Rally go directly into the community for beautification, restoration, maintenance and education.

When I was in Massachusetts last month, I gained roughly six pounds in 3 weeks. There is just something about going home--- I crave the flavors and food rituals of my childhood. There is no home like the taste of home. Right? Sadly for my waistline, one of those tasty rituals is Friendly's.

Every kid in New England grew up with Friendly's. It's the Dairy Queen of the North, if you will. Started in 1935, it was founded not far from my home town and is a staple of small town New England life. It was also where I worked as a "soda jerk" (making ice cream and drinks) for a year when I was in high school. Friendly's is a definite ritual from my childhood and contributed mightily to the expansion of my vacation waist line. While in MA, we were heading to Friendly's after dinner 3-4 nights a week for something along the lines of a hot fudge sundae with their famous Buttercrunch ice cream.

I do enjoy sharing the same "go for ice cream" custom with my kids here in Houston. We often have a casual Saturday dinner out and then take the kids for treat. It's usually not a sundae though, more like a frozen yogurt at Swirll on West Gray. I have long lamented my inability to partake in the cold, after dinner treat ritual within the boundaries of my own neighborhood. I really dislike the fact that some weekends fro-yo is the only reason we get in the car. (Now, I know there are sno-balls/raspas available and a growing amount of baked goods, but I am talking about low sugar/low fat because I simply cannot gain 2 lbs a week, every week, forever.)

Looks like this is about to change and my griping will come to an end. Window peeking on 19th Street yesterday, I noticed a friendly, colorful sign where Dessert Shoppe used to be. It's for... wait for it... wait for it... a frozen yogurt shop! Giddly with excitement, I pulled in to the parking lot to see if I could get some scoop.

Looks like the Heights will be the newest addition to a chain of frozen yogurt shops called "Menchie's." I know. Chain. Eh. Still, I'd rather spend my fro-yo allowance at a shop in the Heights, which may employ some Heights area high schoolers (they're hiring now), than at a fro-yo chain in River Oaks. And I can save gas and work the treat off by walking!

One of the reasons we chose Swirll over places like the BerriPop on Washington is that at Swirll you pick your flavor, administer your own toppings and pay by weight. The smallest mandatory serving at some shops is still too much for my small kids. My older son, while capable of eating a large quantity of dessert, eats so slooooow that we have to give him a very small amount just to avoid being there for 2 hours. From the info on their website, Menchie's is going to work the same way. You pick, mix, top, weigh and pay.

Of course, you know I wish this was a local shop but it may actually be locally owned. The franchise owner may be some savvy Heights resident who didn't know a ton about frozen yogurt, but knew the neighborhood was missing it as an option. He or she searched on line, found a franchise that wasn't common around these parts and invested. Are you out there, new Menchie's owner? Tell us more!

Ahhh. Back at the keyboard. Feels good!

As many of you probably know I was recently awarded the "Best Neighborhood Blog" prize at the inaugural Houston Web Awards from the Houston Press. What an exciting honor! I was back East with the family when I got the announcement and wasn't able to make the party. Bummer. I love a good party. Anyway, many thanks to all of you who read my ramblings here, chat with me on Facebook and tweet around on Twitter.

There are times when people around the Heights will ask me "Oh, so did you hear about this?" and my answer is often "Not yet. Tell me about it." See, I am not really here to break stories. I am here to follow up on how the story fits in our lives in the Heights. It would be way to stressful to always have to be the first to know. There have been a couple times, though, where my desire to be well informed so I can be a good resource has put me in the front of the knowledge line. This was the case with Down House. I was lucky enough to be among the first in the area to know some details about the new eatery on Yale. To back track the how and why, read here and then here.

Well, I have had the pleasure of brunching at Down House since the doors opened and it's quite good. My meal wasn't without it's "just opened" flaws, but my family enjoyed it. Initially the restaurant was only open for breakfast and lunch, with drinks available in the evening. Well, as of this week, they have gone full on.

Down House is now open daily from 7 am to 2 am, serving coffee, breakfast, lunch, small plates, and a quality-focused bar program. As far as the expanded hours and full menu, Chris is excited about the future of Down House in the neighborhood. He says Down House is about wanting "to bring high-quality products to the Heights in a comfortable environment you can visit daily.”

The restaurant utilizes local farms and vendors who deliver “nothing but the best" Headed by Executive Chef Chandler Rothbard, the kitchen works with folks like Black Hill Ranch, Utility Research Garden, Sabra Ranch, Knopp Branch Farm and others "to create some amazing dishes."

Breakfast is available from 7am- 3 pm, Monday through Friday. Evenings bring the small plates menu created to pair with the house cocktails, craft draft beers, and wines. Wondering how Down House gets to have a full bar in the dry part of the Heights? The restaurant holds a private-club liquor license.

Coming off vacation status for "The Magic of the Morning"

If you follow me on Facebook, you know that I am kind in the middle of a summer "brown out," spending time with the kids and generally shirking as much responsibility as possible. However, I wanted to reemerge briefly to tell you/remind you of a great event coming up this Wednesday, June 29.

The Lift on 19th St will be hosting a "book lift-off event" for a delightful picture book, The Magic of the Morning by Laura Lightfoot Tilley. Tilley is a Houston Heights native, who wrote and illustrated the book about a young boy who loves to sleep in until his father convinces him there is, well, magic to be had in the morning. The lift off starts at 6:30 pm, with refreshments and a reading by the author.

Rewind: Proctor Park

Recently, the City Of Houston closed serval park clubhouses and public pools. None were "safe" and any was just as likely to get closed as the next. A group of parents from all over the Heights, as well as State Rep Jessica Farrar, all wrote letter on behalf of the wonderful Pam Foote and Proctor Park. This park is more than just a play place. It is central to life and community in the Proctor Plaza/ North Norhill neighborhood. It is also a favorite of families from all over the Heights and even outside the Heights. There is truly something special about it!

Whether our letters made an impact or not, we can't really know. What we do know is that Proctor will remain open and staffed. In celebration I am bringing back another early post from this blog, which talks about Proctor Park and it's role in the neighborhood.

Before the Proctor reboot, I do want to add that the only other Heights area parks to be effected are Love Pool, which is being closed, and Milroy Park, which will have reduced clubhouse hours. According to this Click2 Houston report, the Mayor based these decisions on usage. I am surprised, then, to see Cherryhurst in Montrose on the list. That is an amazing park that is all well attended when I get south of I10 with my own kiddos.

This little quote also baffles me:

All city-funded youth sports leagues are being eliminated, officials said. However, youth baseball will continue due to funding provided by the Houston Astros.

It's not like sports keep kids out of trouble or anything. Now we'll be spending money cleaning up mischief rather than letting kids do something productive with their summer. Makes perfect sense. Ugh. Well, I digress. Here's Proctor:

When we were house shopping several years ago, we did it with an eye toward raising a family. We found the perfect neighborhood for us- Proctor Plaza. There were so many things that appealed to us about the area. Knowing we would likely sacrifice green space for square footage, public areas were of particular interest. We were thrilled to find a roomy bungalow just 2 blocks from a public park. I knew that I wanted to be near a park, but I had no idea how central the park would become to my life as a stay-at-home mom of a toddler.

Proctor Park is nestled snugly in to the middle of the Proctor Plaza neighborhood, better known to many as North Norhill. The park is a full city block complete with community center and is a hub of activity for our little neighborhood, as well as a destination for families from all over the Heights. Gifted to the neighborhood in 1924, a sign near the path states the purpose: “so that the kids would have a place to play.” Simple enough!

Daily, from morning ‘til the sun goes down, families like mine are making the most of Proctor Park. However, neighbors say this wasn’t always the case. A large covered area, now a learning ground for new bikes and a canvas for sidewalk chalk artists, was once a basketball court. The local lore is the court attracted people from outside the neighborhood- people who didn’t care that this was a quiet subdivision beginning to blossom with young families. The players brought drinking, drugs and general bad behavior, usually leaving the trash of their habits behind. Fights broke out often and the police were often "invited" by neighbors. Parents never felt safe bringing their young children by. Prompted by concerned members of the Proctor Plaza Neighborhood Association (PPNA), the park took the hoops down and change came quickly. Seemingly overnight, it became the park we now know and love.

Spending a lot of time at the park and being active in my neighborhood association, I learned an interesting fact: parks in Houston get funding based on use. While this park has been highly used by families since the hoops were removed, there was no one really working on the park’s behalf. Enter Pam Foote, Proctor’s Recreation Supervisor since 2005.

Pam came to our little park after 15 years at the Mecca of Houston Parks, Memorial Park. Under Ms Pam’s watch, a Park Advisory Council, or PAC, called Friends of Proctor Park was formed. Every park in the city can have one, but Pam is certain Proctor’s is the best. The PAC does fundraising and also hosts events that get the park exposure. In the two years since the PAC was formed, the park has hosted annual events like an easter egg hunt and a fall festival. The park also hosts the neighborhood wide Heights Kids’ Group every Monday, PPNA monthly meetings and other special events. The flurry of activity is generating results- a fresh coat of paint on the playscape and new swing seats are just the beginning of what Pam and the PAC have in store!

In addition to being a fabulous playground, the park offer programs like a free after school program and free t-ball and soccer. For more information on any of these activities, call Pam @ 713.862.6907. [Edit: As stated above, these programs are no longer avaiable due to budget cuts]

Part of what makes this park so appealing to the families from all over The Heights is the air conditioned club house and working bathrooms. As any mom will tell you, access to a restroom can make or break a day at the park! The clubhouse has a small kitchen and can be rented out for events- stipulations include 30 days notice, fee of $90/3 hours use of facilities, plus the cost to hire security. Pam has even charmed a bargain out of one officer, who offers a discounted security rate for regulars at the park. Non-profits can use the facility during the week free of charge.

If you’ve never been by Proctor Park, it’s time for a visit. Play tennis, throw a ball to your dog or just relax in the grass. This is one of the most alive yet peaceful places where you’ll find The Heights at play!

Change of Address

A few weeks ago, I was driving home from who knows where and came across this:

A couple of neighbors were outside watching and I thought I would park for a minute and see what was going on. I figured it would be pretty cool to see a house get hoisted up on a truck or something like that. At first it looked as though this old yellow truck was going to be the carrier. I soon realized that was wrong. There was no way this old tow truck was going to hoist up and carry a house. There was another truck tethered to the house by a chain, but it looked like it was just the cab section of an 18wheeler with some kind of winch on the back. Was a bigger machine coming, I wondered?

The guys working the job stopped the trucks and were finding old pieces of plywood and board around the house, putting them down on the ground on the other side. What was going on? Whatever they were trying to do, it clearly wasn't working.

They fiddled and made adjustments. I started to think I wasn't going to get to see anything worth bragging to my kids about.

But then they changed their tack, moving Mr Old Yellow over to the other side and confirming Mr Blue Cab was ready to rumble.

At this point, one of the guys who seemed to be in charge walked my way and I stopped him to see where the house was going.

"It's not being moved anywhere," he told me. "It's just changing direction."

"On this same lot?" I asked. Basically, it was just a change of address. The house was currently 933 Herkimer; soon it would have a new address on 10th St.

"Interesting." I muttered. "It has something to do with the historic district," he told me, but he didn't know what or why. I don't know what or why either. I can figure only 2 possible scenarios.

1) 10th is the border to a historic district. By giving the house an address on 10th, the property owners are ensuring it doesn't get torn down.

2) 10th is outside of a historic district, but the 900 block of Herkimer is in a HD. Moving the house to have a 10th St address means the house can be demoed.

Can anyone think of any other reason for the property owners to move the house? Does anyone know the borders of the district? Considering that area of the Heights is far more new homes than old, I was surprised to think there was a Historic Designation over there at all.

In any case, they rearranged the trucks in to a formation that seemed to be working. Both trucks hit the gas, causing Yellow to smoke and Blue to loose his footing.

But the house did move, sliding on huge steel beams and random pieces of plywood...

Eventually landing here, 90 degrees from where it had sat for the last ~80 years.

In the middle of typing this post, I got up from my computer and drove over to 10th @ Herkimer. The house is still there, has new piers under it and an orange tag on the front door. I'm guessing whomever owns this house is trying to save it. I still don't know the answer about the Historic District and moving the house. I was wondering if I could find HCAD records for the owners, see if it was a business like Bungalow Revival, but then I realized... I don't know the new address.

Keeping Love Alive

Not everyone may be aware that HISD planned to close Love Elementary as a cost saving measure. Love Elementary is one of the oldest schools in Houston and it's been on the radar of the booming population of young families in the Heights. If you're not aware of the threat of closure, you may also not be aware of the struggle to save this historic school in our neighborhood.

Parents started getting involved with the active PTO at Love before their children were even school age, hoping to have somewhere wonderful to send their kids when schools like Harvard and Travis are at capacity. Many just wanted to be able to help shore up the school they were zoned to. Love's Principal, Robert Chavarria, is an open and enthusiastic administrator, liked and respected by parents, teachers and students. He welcomed parental involvement and everyone saw great things coming for Love's future. Current and future school parents were completely blindsided when it was announced that Love was on the chopping block. They mobilized and called out to the entire neighborhood for help. Like every struggle against City bureaucracy, there were times when it seemed a little hopeless. The neighborhood fought on, though, and received a positive outcome this week as the school closure announcements were finalized, preparing for the May 12th vote.

Without coming right out and saying it, evidence in the HISD Press Release points that Love has been saved, listed as a school that will receive new students from the (unfortunate) closing of Stevenson Elementary in Cottage Grove.

"Stevenson Elementary (current enrollment of 357 students) would close. Students would be redistributed to Memorial and Love elementary schools."

It really is amazing what we can do when we pull together! The thing about the effort to save Love Elementary that makes me most proud is what a community effort it was. It was not just parents of kids going to Love; it was parents from all over the Heights, many who already have school age kids in other schools or residents who don't even have kids yet! Everyone came together to show that our neighbors' struggles are our struggles. It was evidence of the understanding of a common future. Educating our kids is tantamount to our success as a society and having neighborhood schools for our children is of great benefit to everyone in the Heights. Schools are huge community builders. Through the efforts to save Love Elementary, we have once again woven the fabric of neighborhood tighter.

Congratulations to all the hard working teachers, administrators, PTO parents and community members who made this happen!

The most recent post is about the Victorian Architecture of the Heights and I thought I would share it with my own blog readers. Nadia says "I know there are several blogs bouncing around about the Heights, but I thought this one might be a little different since it is someone with an architecture degree, as well as a homeowner, doing the writing. Saturday, April 30, 10 AM- 4 PM: St. Andrew's Episcopal Church invites chalk artists of all ages to express themselves at Sidewalk Art Fest

Held in conjunction with the Spring Bazaar, artists will create masterpieces with chalk and water in celebration of the church's centennial in the Houston Heights. Theme for the sidewalk creations is "A Century of Faith....to be continued...." Whether a first-timer or professional, chalk artists young and not-so-young are welcome!
In addition to chalk art, the wares of more than 40 artists, crafters and other vendors will also be showcased. The Spring Bazaar will also feature good food, music and great shopping
Admission is free!

Saturday, April 30th, Noon- 6 PM: 2nd Annual Noah's Kitchen Chili Cookoff and bake sale

Noah's Kitchen provides the less fortunate with food, gently used clothing, and the resources that will help them in finding medical help, shelter, employment, and eventually housing.
Last year's cook off was a huge success and provided much needed help to the hungry and homeless. This year they are adding a bake sale to the cook off, hoping to raise even more. They still need donations of baked goods including cookies, muffins, cakes, pies and rice crispy treats. If you can donate baked goods, please call Amy at 713-854-6713
