Heights Happenings: February 28- March 7

Wow- the last 2 weeks flew by! I had my niece and nephew in town from the northeast, giving me 4 kids under the age of 7. I have to say, I handled it pretty well but a couple things fell by the wayside- like my weekly Happenings posts. We will still having a good time over on facebook, though, so be sure to like the page if you haven't yet. LOTS of good stuff coming up in and around the Heights!

Thursday, February 28, 5:30 pm- 7 PM: HHWC Happy Hour
Friday, March 1, 7:30 pm: McCheek’s Academy hosts Clay & DJ
  • Carole and crew will be taking clay, patterns and letters to Teya Sparks new space downtown this for Clay and DJ. It will be like a mini session of Clay and Cabernet with added party and the help of a DJ! Carole will fire everything you make, too.
  • Fat Cat Creamery will be there, with delicious ice cream and Kahlua floats. You're welcome to BYOB. If you've never been to Clay and Cabernet before, this is a great chance for you to check out the scene, and if you have been before and want to come this is a fun night for you too!

Saturday, March 2, 11am- 6pm: Happy 9th Anniversary to First Saturday Arts Market
  • Nine years ago on the first Saturday in March, the Yale Street Arts & Flower Market was born. Two dozen artists took a chance on it, and over a 1000 friends and neighbors shopped and strolled.
  • Renamed First Saturday Arts Market, the monthly market is always a sellout, with fun, friendly crowds, fantastic local and traveling artists, music, tasty food, drinks, and desserts.

Tuesday, March 5, 5 pm- 9 pm: Big Mamou Good Bye party
  • Sadly, after 4 years in a great bungalow restaurant with an amazing patio, the owners of the Big Mamou have decided to shut their doors. Before they do, though, they will host one last party for customers, serving up red beans and rice and gumbo free for friends and neighbors.

Saturday, March 16, 12 noon- 6 pm: The Sustainable Living Fest Returns to Market Square Park
  • This super fun, free festival transforms downtown neighborhood park into Houtopia!
  • This is a great event for people who want a fun and unique way to celebrate all things green! Drive the full 5 minutes from the Heights to Market Square Park to enjoy everything the fourth annual Sustainable Living Fest has to offer! More than 60 exhibitors and promises a full day of eco-education and solution-based interactive events. 
  • Enjoy live music, local eats and artists, living green demonstrations, as well a place for kids of all ages to play and learn.

Sunday, March 17: Tour de Houston Presented by Apache Corporation
  • The severe drought conditions spreading throughout Texas have dramatically increased the need to protect our parks and green spaces. Funds raised from this year's ride will benefit Houston's reforestation efforts through our non-profit partner, Houston Parks Board, dedicated to creating, improving and protecting parkland in the greater Houston region.
  • This annual fundraising bike ride has 20, 45, and 70 mile courses.

Saturday, March 23, 11am-2pm: Vineyard Church of Houston's Bubblefest 
  • For children ages 3-12 years at the Hogg Middle School Spark Park. 
  • Bubblefest was voted one of the Heights' best events last year. There will be bubble everything; bubble foam pits, games, face painting, a bubble prince and princess, and bubble contests. 
  • Kids should wear play clothes that can get dirty and bring a towel to wipe off bubbles!
