Heights Happenings: August 22- August 29, 2012

Feels good to be home! We had an excellent time in The Berkshires, even if Daddy was stuck home minding the fort. If you've never been to beautiful Western Massachusetts, you should think about it for a late summer vacation. There is something for everyone: amazing art, hiking, music, theater, water, food. It's amazing how much there is to do.

Heard you got some rain here, so that was good. Did I miss anything else exciting over the last two weeks?

Now, on to our regularly scheduled blog post:

Friday, August 24, 2012, 6 pm: Etsy's Annual Meetup Craft Party 2012 at Roundtable Goods
  • One of the Heights’ newest shops dedicated to the handmade, Roundtable Goods is honored to be hosting the Houston site of Etsy's Annual Meetup Craft Party 2012
Many of the shop’s artists also sell on Etsy. Etsy’s community of sellers and customers appreciate the art of handmade and "shopping small." For Roundtable, hosting this paryy was a perfect fit!
  • This year's party theme is "Wish you were here!" and accordingly, participants will be creating Texas-themed stationery cards.  The shop will have craft supplies galore, music, light refreshments, lots of socializing and fun. Get to know your fellow crafting community here at Roundtable.
  • If you are interested in attending, please RSVP here.  For more information about the Annual Craft Party, check out this Etsy article.

Saturday August 25th 6pm -9pm: Opening of Patrick Renner’s “Vestigal Structures” at Avis Frank Gallery

  • as species evolve or grow. Patrick Renner's medium is wood salvaged from old
  • homes and demolition sites. He has a special interest in wood that shows a daily
  • interaction between the substance of the building and human traffic, such as
  • a worn door casing or a paint-patched length of trim.
  • Using these discarded remnants speaks to the original structure and the family
  • it housed.  Its use as a construction medium extends or amplifies the ideas
  • of home, vessel and abandoned construct.”

Heights Happenings: August 1- August 8, 2012

Well, there isn't much to say. If you don't already know what's happening in the Heights this weekend...

But just in case you just emerged from your Edina-style isolation tank, this weekend is none other than White Linen Night. If you're just finding this out now, don't try to book a room at a Heights B&B or make reservations at your usual Heights eatery. Booked solid. However, do roam the main roadways of the Heights and experience all kinds of everything good the neighborhood has to offer.

the best resource for what's happening where, with links to the webpage schedule and updates as we get closer.

IN OTHER NEWS:

Ruggle's Green
The neighborhood was anticipating the Heights location of Ruggle's Green to open by August, but that isn't going to happen. As is often the case, once work started in the building, they realized they were worse off than they thought. The interior will need even more work and a lot more money than originally anticipated. Freddie Marques, the "Green Guy" behind the restaurant chain, says RG is still committed to the location. "What we want is to build something that is very nice and functional and maintains integrity of the original building." I don't know about you, but I feel very certain the investment will pay off. I look forward to seeing the new renderings when they're complete and sharing them with you.

Heights Happenings: July 26 - August 1, 2012

I’m late with my post this week. My mom is in town and we are getting some major purging done at the house. Today I dropped off donations at five different locations, including Sand Dollar on Yale, Heights Interfaith Food Pantry, to a mom who brings items to Casa de Esperanza, and to Texas Art Asylum! I hate to generate trash and tend to hold on to things like pieces of my kids toys because I always think “someone, somewhere will be able to use this and keep it from the landfill.” Texas Art Asylum is the place that makes that happen! From used paint to toy parts to old photos to whatever, this quirky shop gives a 2nd life to many things we would otherwise throw away.

I’m sure by now you’ve heard about FFL’s new amazing LEED certified, no kill shelter in the Heights. I want to recommend liking their Facebook page for a couple of reasons:
  • It’s a great way to find out what their greatest needs are at any one time. You can usually order supplies for the shelter right from their Amazon Wish List. By being a fan on Facebook, you’ll know if their greatest need is pureed baby foods for new kittens, stainless steel feeding bowls, or ink cartridges for their printer. It makes it so easy to support them with in-kind donations.

Are you a Lorax?

A local Heights area mom recently wrote to Mayor Parker regarding the loss of nineteen mature Live Oaks on Yale. She compared herself to The Lorax whom, in Dr Seuss' wonderful book, "speaks for the trees." Clearly, the trees can't speak for themselves. If they could, there would still be nineteen 30+ year old Live Oaks on Yale.

RUDH, who watches every step of development at the Yale St Walmart location, was one of the first groups to notice the trees were gone and start doing something about it. If you follow my Facebook page, you probably remember me posting the photo of a few of the crunched trees. It was truly heartbreaking, especially when last summer's drought cost us millions of trees. Trees help temper this hellacious heat, help clean the air (and we all know Houston has bad air) and also help prevent land erosion.

According to the US Department of Agriculture:
  • The net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to ten room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day.
  • One acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people.

There are more great facts about the benefits of trees listed on The Arbor Day Foundation's webpage. Check it out and see how trees help your environment, your stress level and your property value!

So, now we have lost these trees. What is going to happen? In public meetings, people opposed to the Walmart development were ensured that steps were being taken to make the area pedestrian friendly. How can that be true with no shade trees? Yes, Ainbinder does plan on putting trees in- significantly lower caliper and much less hardy Mexican Sycamores. These will never replicate the Live Oaks. Oh yeah, and they're not putting them back on the sidewalk. The planned "replacements" will be on Heights Boulevard. There is also no plan for any tree lines along the Koehler side of the development. Can someone tell me why we gave them $6million public dollars again? Must cost a lot to put in a bike trail to nowhere...

Anyway, please join me and write to the City about the trees. The Mayor was a Board Member at Trees For Houston. How could her administration permit removal of all these trees? It's beyond me.

My note to the City was simple. Yours can be, too. However, should you want to write something more elaborate, RUDH has provided this sample letter on their StopTheHeightsWalmart Facebook page:

mayor@houstontx.gov
cc: districtc@houstontx.gov, info@rudh.org
 Dear Mayor Parker:
I am concerned that the new retail development at Koehler and Yale has removed, but not replaced, many of our valued street trees. The developer’s mitigation plan calls for the majority of trees to be replanted on the Heights Blvd. median, which is a purely recreational space. Our sidewalks are where pedestrians move. It is where we walk with our children, wait for transit and cycle alongside. The Live Oak tree canopy in the Heights provides much needed shade in the extreme summer heat and some respite from the rain.
Our trees should be carefully guarded. If they must be removed for changes to infrastructure, they should be replaced as close to the same location as possible. Large, heat-resonating developments should specify street trees around their site to promote walk-ability and reduce the heat island effect.
With Houston making great strides with their hike and bike trails, and the recent U.S. Department of Transportation awarding $15 Million in TIGER Grant to Houston for pedestrian and bike infrastructure improvements, it seems fiscally responsible to ensure that developers take steps to tie into this system. Street trees are the ideal place to start. I’m asking you to please find a positive resolution for our neighborhood and area infrastructure. Plant street trees on Yale and Koehler Streets.
Sincerely,

Sign your letter with your name. Sign it with no name. Sign it with "The Lorax." It doesn't matter how you sign it, just as long as you send it!
